One would think it is sufficient to get married to a $600 million rich retired NFL player, but Marianne Staubach begs to differ. For starters, she knew this man even before he knew what he wanted to be in the future. They began dating even before his career kicked off greatly, and she wouldn’t miss out on her dreams just to be the wife of a rich athlete.
That said, Marianne juggled for a long while between being a registered nurse, the wife of a super-talented and rich former football player, and the mother of five established children.
Now, she is also a grandmother to more than a dozen grandkids as well as a philanthropist whose numerous acts of service have won her many recognitions and awards over the years.
Marianne Staubach met Her Husband Back in the 4th Grade
Roger Staubach met his wife, Marianne, way back in the 4th grade. She was a Cincinnati native born April 23, 1942, who ended up living most of her life in Dallas but that story is a time travel to the future.
The couple are high-school-through-college sweethearts who started dating in high school despite knowing for longer.
After high school, Roger went on to join the Naval Academy while his sweetheart studied at a nursing school. They often sent each other letters to keep the flame in their relationship burning.
After a while, the letters became less frequent, according to Roger. During his senior year in college, he switched positions on the football team. He initially played as a receiver in his freshman years but as a senior, he switched to playing as a quarterback. With that, he even won the Heisman.
At this point, the letter exchange picked up again and the love was reenkindled.
Days turned into weeks and those, into months, and as the years flew by, Marianne and her football-playing boyfriend switched up on their relationship status as well.
They went from high school sweethearts to lovers and eventually slated their wedding to happen on September 4, 1965.
They have been married since then and are currently 58 years married.
Roger Staubach’s wife was, at the time of his career peak, a very important part of everything concerning him. She played the role of his wife, cheerleader, and when he suffered about 6 concussions in a calendar year, her nursing instincts came into play and she advised him on how best to take care of himself.
In as much as she enjoys the perks of being married to one of the highest-paid NFL players of all time, Marianne wouldn’t compromise on her husband’s health for all the riches in the world.
She is a Registered Nurse
As already stated, Marianne is a registered nurse. She attended college where she studied to be a nurse, graduated with her nursing degree, and took all necessary certificate courses and examinations available then, to qualify her as a registered nurse.
There isn’t much about where she may have worked at the start of her career as being a celebrity wife may have overshadowed that aspect of her life. However, in more recent times, she has lent her expertise when needed.
As a registered nurse, Marianne will forever be remembered for being part of the Visiting Nurse Association Board in 2004.
Certainly, her expertise came in handy as the wife of an athlete who had to retire due to several injuries suffered during play.
It has also come into play in many different ways that we possibly cannot completely list.
Roger Staubach and his Wife are Proud Parents of 5
Former NFL professional player, Roger Staubach and his wife, Marianne, welcomed 5 children together. The couple welcomed 5 children – 4 girls and a boy. The children are Mitchelle Elizabeth, Stephanie Marie, Amy Lynn, Jennifer Anne, and Jeffery Roger.
- Mitchelle was born in Florida in 1968 but moved to Dallas a year later with her mum and football-playing father.
She is a writer and author who published her first children’s book in March 2015 and it is titled ‘Where is Pidge’.
Marianne’s first daughter has been married to John Grimes since 1997 and together, they have 3 children named Jeffery, Gracie, and Emma.
Mitchelle battled mental illness for a long time. She eventually triumphed after many years, help from family and loved ones, as well as many treatments.
- Stephanie Staubach was born in Dallas at the time when her father’s career had taken a pretty good shape. She grew up watching her father play football and her mum juggle between her nursing career and a supportive wife, and caring mother.
As the years went by, Stephanie attended college and earned a degree in law. Upon graduation, she started a career in private law practice and even got to work for her father as a general counsel in the Staubach company. This was after Roger had retired from playing football.
Stephanie Staubach Philips is a married woman and has 2 children whom she lives with in Dallas.
- Jennifer Staubach is the third daughter of the former registered nurse and her athlete husband. She took the route of politics and has served as a Member of the Dallas, Texas City Council for many years now. Jennifer represented District 13 from 2013 until June 14, 2021.
Jennifer Staubach Gates is married to John Anthony Gates and together, they have 2 children.
- Amy Lynn Staubach Mentgen is the 4th daughter of Roger and Marianne. She was born after the couple suffered a stillbirth of another daughter about the same time Roger lost his father to diabetes.
Amy Staubach, just like her older sisters, is married and goes by the name Amy Mentgen now.
She runs the family’s foundation which was founded way back in 1979 as part of their estate planning.
- Jeffery Roger Staubach is the only son of Marianne and her husband of almost 6 decades. He was born in Dallas and attended Duke University. He looked to take over from his father in athleticism as he played baseball as a Letterman for the Blue Devil team for 4 years.
Soon after, Jeff as he is fondly called, signed a contract with the New York Yankees and played on the team for 2 seasons. He later joined the Greensboro Grasshoppers for 2 seasons as well.
After a while, Roger was able to convince Jeff to join the family company and continue the legacy.
Jeff has been part of the Staubach company and served as a head of property acquisitions across the United States of America. He is also married and has kids with his wife.
From all her kids’ marriage, Roger and his wife now have at least 15 grandchildren.
Marianne Staubach started Meals on Wheels as One of her Philanthropic Gestures
As earlier stated, Marianne is neck deep into philanthropy and while this isn’t only her thing, she is quite a ring leader.
She has been part of many boards, serving in different capacities as a member and even head, sometimes.
Roger Staubach’s wife serves on the board of advisors of the Jesuit College Preparatory School, the Catholic Foundation Board of Advisors, and also the Catholic Foundation Board, and the Visiting Nurse Association Board.
She, with the help of her son and another philanthropist, Mary Templeton started ‘Meals on Wheels’, a venture aimed at providing meals to many homes and people.
In 2005, an unfortunate inferno happened at the headquarters of the Visting Nurse Association which housed Meals on Wheels. This incident propelled Park Place Porsche to host a fundraising for the VNA and they realized over $300,000 to help in the rebuilding of the headquarters.
She Helps to Manage the Staubach Foundation
Roger Staubach’s philanthropic wife has been a huge part of all the former athlete started. She was, just like her kids, a part of the Staubach Company but was more involved in the family’s foundation.
The 81-year-old has always been a volunteer who served in many charitable causes in Texas and as far as she could. As a trustee of the Staubach Family Foundation, Marianne has focused on athletics, education, Roman Catholic causes, children/youth services as well as military/veterans organizations.
For her numerous contributions, Staubach has been conferred many awards including Catholic Foundation Award in 2009.
