Joy Ann Richards is the wife of Jamie Farr who is a well-known American theatre, film, and TV actor. The pair got married in 1967 when Jamie was still finding ground in the movie industry and though they didn’t have a luxurious wedding, their ceremony was graced by several actors.
From navigating the tough times of their early start to a lifetime commitment that has spanned over 50 years, Jamie’s wife is by all accounts a supportive partner, mother, and grandmother. Here’s all we know about her.
Joy Ann Richards is a Native of Danville Illinois
Even though Joy Ann Richards has become a public figure following her marriage to Jamie Farr, it’s unfortunate that very little if not close to nothing is known about her. As such, details about her date of birth, early life, and family background are unknown.
Nonetheless, we gathered that she is a native of Danville, a small town in Vermilion County, Illinois, United States. As regards her age, Joy could be in her early 80s given that she may be only a few years younger than her husband.
Joy’s husband Jamie Farr whose real name is Jameel Joseph Farah was born on July 1 1934 and he is 89 years old at the moment.
Jamie Farr’s Wife Previously Worked as a Bookkeeper and Receptionist
As earlier said, Joy has lived in the shadows of her husband for so many years that her career was never captured. However, she was holding her end as a bookkeeper and receptionist when she met Jamie. In an interview, her husband Jamie Farr revealed that he was driving her to work every day with his ancient rusted Renault.
Asides from this, she later co-authored a children’s book titled Hababy Christmas Eve alongside her husband.
Joy’s Husband was a Struggling Actor Before His Breakthrough Role
Jamie Farr has been an entertainer since his high school days. He earned several positions in school including feature editor of the school newspaper, president of the radio class, and active member of the drama society. Albeit, he didn’t get the best of luck when he left school.
Jamie struggled to find a place in the industry and some quarters even describe him as one of the hopeless guys on the West Coast. He managed to survive with a few minor roles in movies such as The Blackboard Jungle and No Time for Sergeants. Many years passed until he was later given a role in the 1965 film The Greatest Story Ever Told which became his breakthrough film. According to Jamie, his breakthrough was divine stating that he lighted candles and prayed to St Jude at a little white stucco church.
Following this, he earned roles in films such as Who’s Minding the Mint, With Six You Get Eggroll, Cannonball Run, and Cannonball Run II and made several appearances in shows including Hazel, My Three Sons, Donna Reed, The Dick Van Dyke Show, I Dream of Jeannie, My Favorite Martian, Get Smart, Gomer Pyle and The Flying Nun.
Jamie Farr became widely known for his 1972 role in M*A*S*H as Maxwell Q. Klinger, a cross-dressing corporal who became a sergeant.
Joy Ann Richards’ Husband Didn’t Propose with a Ring
Jamie Farr was only a struggling actor when he met his wife Joy Ann Richards. While it’s hard to assert how they met and fell in love, we garnered that Joy was really supportive as his girlfriend and it didn’t take long before he proposed to her. Well, he did this without a ring following his financial struggles.
Nonetheless, Joy agreed to marry him and they officially did on February 16, 1963, the same year he got a role in The Greatest Story Ever Told as Thaddaeus. 13 years into the marriage, Richard presented a 1.5-carat emerald ring to his ever-supportive wife at one of their favorite restaurants.
The Couple Wedding Ceremony was Witnessed By Jesus, Mary the Mother of God, and the Apostles
Admittedly, Joy and Jamie’s wedding became an overwhelming ceremony with a cast of The Greatest Story Ever Told films such as Max Von Sydow who portrayed Jesus, Dorothy McGuire as Mary the Mother of God, and other apostles. It was held in an orthodox church and they were joined by father Paul who expressed that it was his first time working in front of the boss referring to Max (Jesus).
The pair have been together for over half a century year and continue to enjoy marital bliss. They will be celebrating their 60th anniversary come Febuary 2023. Joy and Jamie are also proud parents of two children Jonas Farr and Yvonne Farr and a grandson, Dorian.
