In 2014, when Jaah Kelly the trans-son of R-Kelly opened up on his orientation, he suffered rejection, depression, and bullying. As a result, she was confined in a psychiatric hospital for three weeks and that experience left her scarred and seemingly away from her spotlight.
From our research, Jaah has since moved on from the twist of her sexual orientation and currently identifies as a lesbian. She pours her emotions into music and rap just like her father, R. Kelly who remains one of the most successful R$B singers in history. Here’s all to know about her.
R-Kelly’s Child, Jaah Kelly Suffered Depression and Bullying after Identifying as a Transgender Male
Jaah Kelly was born sometime in 2000 and was raised in the United States alongside her parents R. Kelly and Andrea Lee and 2 siblings, Joann Kelly and Robert Kelly Jr.
Though born female, she disclosed that she has never felt like one as she was attracted to other girls and choose men’s clothing over dresses or heels. According to Jaah, she had always known that she was trans at around 6 or 7 years old but only told her mother when she was 10 years old.
Jaah’s mother revealed that her daughter was scared to open up to her cause she thought she wouldn’t love her anymore. Nonetheless, Andrea disclosed that the love of a mother is unconditional and her daughter’s orientation didn’t change how she felt about her rather she encouraged her to live her best life as she would always protect her.
Unfortunately, Jaah didn’t receive the same love from the public when she came out as a trans male at 14. She posted a video via her then-active Ask-fm account where she introduced her said as Jay Kelly and said, “I believe I am a boy and want surgery and the medication to help me be who I was supposed to be”.
Following this, she fell into deep depression and was also bullied in school. Consequently, she had to spend three weeks at a psychiatric hospital.
She currently Identifies as a Lesbian
According to Jaah, when she discovered her likeness to other females, she felt like the only way she could like another girl was if she were a boy. As such, she began the process of transitioning. However, following her experience at the psychiatric hospital, she came out as a different person.
At present, she identifies as a lesbian and disclosed that she doesn’t mind if people refer to her as a male, female, genderfluid, or even non-binary. Jash also noted that she is true to herself and that doesn’t need a label.
She also noted that “The reason I dress the way I dress is because I want to. The reason I do anything at all is because I want to. It just makes me happy. I feel like there are so many people who don’t do what they want to do in life.”
She also noted that in terms of having a relationship, she doesn’t see herself with just one person. According to her, there are a lot of personalities and experiences one would miss by just taking to one person for life as there’s more to explore with other people.
Jaah Kelly Doesn’t Have a Relationship with her Father
As far as the public knows music is the only connection Jaah shares with her father. Her parents divorced in 2009 after 13 years as a couple and that gradually caused a strain in the relationship between father and daughter.
When Jaah came out as a transgender in 2014, her father rather than supporting her suggested in an interview that it was a rumour. He told the host to only believe what he sees with his eyes. Another source later reported that R. Kelly was simply in denial of Jahh’s orientation and that was rather unfair on the then 14-year-old who desperately needed her family’s support and love.
While Jaah has not opened up on her relationship, her elder sister Joann disclosed in a 2019 interview that she doesn’t have a relationship with her father and also noted that being his daughter is like a double edge sword.
As you would easily find, Jaah’s father’s, R. Kelly pursued a career in the musical industry and rose to become one of the successful R$B singers known for songs such as When a Woman is Fed Up (1998), I Believe I Can Fly (1996), You Remind Me (1995), and Step in the Name of Love (2003).
At present, he is currently in jail following multiple charges of sexual abuse and sex trafficking which date back to the 1990s.
