The duo got married on June 16th, 1980 at Laguna Beach “among the hermit crabs and tide pools”. Lauren revealed this during their 42nd wedding anniversary. In the post, she revealed that Tony was battling with health challenges and called for prayers for the veteran actor. At that time, she revealed that he had another Immunotherapy infusion coming up that same week.
For the 42 years of their marriage, they didn’t have a child. Lauren focused her time on her husband and a furry dog named Poppy.
Lauren Shulkind Helped Her Husband Battle Depression
Despite her husband’s success in the movie industry, he battled depression at a point in his life. He was not shy to share his experience. The actor even went on to become a spokesperson for the National Depressive and Manic-Depressive Association, now known as Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance.
He revealed that being on TV epitomized the ideal life but he wasn’t living it as he was suffering from depression up until his 50s.
Lauren played a significant role in the actor’s recovery from the mental illness. She revealed that she was proud of how he handled his emotions through that period. The filmmaker also found solace in art as he lived creative life sculpting. It is safe to say that the fact that Lauren was an artist contributed to his recovery.
The Celebrity Wife Was Supportive of Her Husband Through His Battle With Cancer
Lauren’s husband was diagnosed with cancer in 2022. The couple put out a joint statement via his Facebook page to that effect, sharing the devastating news of his diagnosis. However, they did not give details of the disease. The statement read:
Dear Friends & Fans of Tony Dow,I have some very sad news to share with you.Unfortunately, Tony has once again been diagnosed with cancer.He is approaching this reality so bravely, but it is truly heartbreaking.We want to thank you in advance for your caring thoughts.Our Love,Lauren & Tony
Before this diagnosis, he was down and hospitalized with pneumonia, from which he recovered. Lauren was there by his side through all these health challenges, encouraging and cheering him on.
Lauren Shulkind Accidentally Passed the Wrong Information About Her Husband’s Death
On July 26, 2022, Lauren mistakenly reported that her husband was dead. However, his son and management confirmed that the actor was still alive and it was an error. The post was then taken down.
His son, Christopher wrote in a statement that at the time, his father the Leave it to Beaver actor was “in his home, under hospice care and in his last hours”. He also revealed that he and his wife were by his side along with many of the actor’s friends who has visited over time. Chris added that his father had a fighting heart.
Sadly, a day after this erroneous report, Tony Dow passed away. It was confirmed via his Facebook page that he passed in the early hours of Friday, June 27, 2022, after a battle with kidney cancer at the age of 77.
