Who is John Wayne Gacy’s Ex-wife, Marlynn Myers?
She is the ex-wife of the notorious American serial killer, John Wayne Gacy. Marlynn Myers was born to Fred W. Myers and his wife. Other details about her early life are not so clear.
However, her father was a successful businessman that ran many stores including a chain of Kentucky Fried Chicken States back in the 60s.
How Marlynn Myers Met And Married John Wayne Gacy
Myers and her future husband, Gacy first met at their place of work, a show-making outfit known as Nunn-Bus Shoe company based in Springfield. They started out as colleagues at the company’s men’s outlet store at Roberts Brothers before they started dating.
The duration of their dating is generally said to be a period of 6 months yet another source places it at six months. Whatever the case, they decided to take the next big step by getting married in 1964. At the time, Gacy described the period as a time of stability. His reason for describing it as such is due to the abusive childhood he had suffered from his father who never thought he would make anything of his life.
As a result, Gacy worked so hard to please him, and obviously, his marriage was one of the proud moments that his father acknowledged.
They were together for A few Years Before Their Divorce
Myers and her new husband moved into a house where her parents lived in waterloo, Iowa. Her parents left the house to run the chain of Kentucky Fried Chicken stores they had bought previously. Also, their move created an opportunity for Gacy to work as a manager in one of such stores in the early years of their marriage.
Despite this, it did not stop Gacy from abusing teenage boys. Subsequently, he was charged with sexual assault after raping one of his young employees.
As it turned out, he tried to sweep the matter under the carpet when he employed someone to attack the victim to stop him from appearing in court. He later pleaded guilty to sodomy and was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment. However, he served only 18 months and was released.
Myer’s filed for a divorce from him when he was charged with the assault in December 1968. Their divorce was finalized in 1969 bringing to an end their marriage of less than a decade.
Marlynn Myers Had Two Children With Her Ex-Husband
Despite the sad divorce of Myers and her ex-husband, the marriage was blessed with two children. She had her first child, a son named Michael Gacy in February 1966. This was followed by the birth of her second child, a daughter, Christine Gacy in March 1967.
Though her ex-husband later turned into a violent criminal in the years following their marriage, her children had a normal childhood as there are no cases of him abusing them. However, it did not stop their mother from seeking sole custody of her children when she divorced Gacy. In fact, Myers moved herself and her kids far away from Gacy.
Her Children Never Saw their Father After Their Divorce
Moving on from her divorce, she and her children never saw Gacy who was later to have killed more than 30 people. Of this number, he buried 29 in his home.
The discoveries were made after he killed his last known victim, Robert Piest and in the course of the investigation, his other victims’ remains were found. It led to his trial and conviction for the 33 murders in 1980. Per the trial and evidence, he was sentenced to death but it took over a decade before the execution took place.
Years after his death, the trauma of his crimes impacted his two children such that they chose to live quietly. While their mother made sure they never saw their father when they were children, even as adults, they stayed away leading to many speculations about them changing their identities.
As revealed by their aunt, Karen Kuzma in an interview, they also kept their distance from anyone in their father’s family as her messages were never replied to.
On her part, she hid her maiden name for years till she opened up in the said interview.
Her Marriage to the Serial Killer Was Not The Last One for Him
Following her 4 years marriage to the renowned serial killer, John Wayne Gacy moved on with Carole Hoff. Apparently, he had known her for some time as she was a friend to his sister Karen and was said to have been cordial with each other.
Myers’s ex-husband got married to Hoff, a divorcee, and mother of two daughters in 1972. Hoff’s daughters lived with Gacy in his home. As observed, the girls never had any complaints about their stepfather abusing them despite the many instances of such in the past.
During the marriage, Gacy had already killed his first victim and had committed other crimes right in their home without her knowledge.
However, it was two years later that she noticed his disappearances at night, his stash of porn magazines and items belonging to other men.
It turns out that Gacy was bisexual and he had been cheating on his wife. It is alleged that he later opened up to her about his sexuality after she confronted him. Like his first marriage to Myers, Hoff also divorced Gacy in 1976.
Unlike his first marriage, Gacy’s second marriage did not produce any children.
