Since 2021 she has starred as Barbara Howard on the ABC mockumentary sitcom Abbott Elementary, for which she received the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, becoming the first Black woman in 35 years to win the award. Ivy is a U.S. national, but her roots are traced to West Africa from her mother’s side and West India from her Farther’s side. Ivy inherited her name from her grandmother, Ivy Ralph O.D., a Jamaican fashion designer and the creator of the kariba suit. She also partnered with her mother to create global “Sister Circles” where women and children infected and affected with HIV/AIDS are allowed to speak and tell their stories with other women and children from around the world.
Similarly, Ivy attended her mother’s Divas Simply Singing HIV/ AIDS benefit in 2012 and she encouraged more people her age to get tested while advocating for more discussions between parents and their children about ‘safe s*x.
