1. She is not the only athlete in her family
Born April 22, 1997, Marissa Maeve Sheva was raised in Sellersville by her parents Bryan and Bernadette Sheva. She has two siblings: an older sister Caitly and a younger brother, Cameron. Her sister Caitlyn competed in track and cross country at East Carolina.
Marissa’s sister also competed for Penn State’s track and field team. The Irish star and her sister were once featured together for their track exploits in 2013. They even went racing against each other.
Marissa’s paternal grandfather, Jack Sheva was also a sport enthusiast. He enjoyed playing golf and coaching her and her cousins until he passed at the age of 80 on November 7, 2018.
2. Marissa Sheva was one of the most accomplished distance runners at Pennridge
The Sellersville athlete used to be one of the most successful cross-country runners in Pennridge’s history. Reports have it that the athlete was a two-sport athlete before she settled for soccer in 2018.
She held the top two spots in the school’s history at the state championship. She also competed in outdoor track where she finished 25th at the Foot Locker Nationals and seventh Regionals.
One of her notable achievements includes winning the indoor state championship in the mile run with a time of 4 minutes, and 58.46 seconds.
3. Her Amateur career highlights
Marissa played four seasons of college soccer at Pennsylvania State University. She played as a freshman and later became a 2015 NCAA Division I women’s soccer tournament champion.
The Sellersville ace decided to end her soccer career temporarily in 2018 after making over 92 appearances with 13 goals and nine assists with the Nittany Lions. For that reason, she did not enter the 2019 NWSL College Draft.
Washington Spirit midfielder Marissa Sheva spent some of her time with Deportivo Alves Gloriosas of Spain’s Segunda Division Pro and Utah Royals FC of the NWSL in 2020. With that, she earned a spot in the professional women’s soccer league in the world. She was also one of the three rookies the team signed ahead of the 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup. Sadly, hip surgery ruled her out of the season’s game.
She went on to join the Washington Spirit during their 2022 season.
4. Sheva earned her first call-up by Ireland’s senior team in 2023
In February 2023, Sheva was called to join the training camp in Marbella. This was shortly after she notified the Football Association of Ireland of her eligibility for the Republic of Ireland women’s national football team.
She gained eligibility to play for the country through her maternal grandparents who are from county Donegal and county Tyrone.
Marissa Sheva won her first cap as a substitute in a 0-0 friendly draw with China on February 22, 2023.
