The true story of Maureen Wilson cannot be rightly told without the mention of her ex-celebrity husband, Robert Plant who happens to be the popular award-winning lead singer and lyricist of the English rock band – Led Zeppelin.
While it is generally said that Maureen is only in the spotlight because of her 15 years long marriage to Robert, she was actually very instrumental and resourceful to Robert’s entertainment career success. More so, Maureen and Robert became an admired couple in the mid-90s only to be discovered later that Robert had a soft spot for Shirley Wilson; Maureen’s sister.
Be that as it may, the true story of Robert Plant’s ex-wife is that of an Asian immigrant, nurse, and mother of 3, who completely fell in love at first sight and gave up everything she had to bring up the king that lies in her man. The man that is now reckoned as the ‘Greatest Voice in Rock.’
Maureen Wilson’s Early Life and Career
Wilson was born in Kolkata India on November 20, 1948. There isn’t much information about her early life and childhood background except that her family moved to West Bromwich, England shortly after she was born.
Maureen has remained in England ever since and even though details about her life are hidden from the media, the 75-year-old is also known to have been a practicing nurse at a point in her life. She has also had a stint in the entertainment industry, featuring in movies like Broken Badges (1990).
All there is to Know About Her Marriage and Divorce
Maureen met Robert Plant in 1966 at a Georgie Fame concert which was canceled at the last minute. Though the cancellation was a disappointment to many, it became a blessing in disguise for Maureen and Robert who met at the venue of the event and fell in love at first sight.
Robert was undoubtedly a performing artist at that time but he had things going very rough for him financially. This was because he was still trying to get a foothold in the entertainment industry. More so, he did not have a job that was paying well because he dropped out of school when he was 16.
Plant had to be assisted by Maureen who was a practicing professional nurse at that time. She stood by him through all his troubles and helped him to secure a job in her father’s steel factory until he got stabilized.
The pair got married on November 9, 1968, and the wedding became very significant because Robert’s band, Led Zeppelin made its official debut that day with a performance at the couple’s reception.
After their wedding, Maureen briefly joined her husband in a number of tours but later retired to take care of their kids; Carmen Jane Plant, Karac Pendragon plant (died in 1972 as a result of a stomach virus.), and Logan Romero Plant.
She also quit her job as a professional nurse to take care of her family.
Was Shirley Wilson the Reason Why Maureen Divorced Plant?
So many people may be asking this question because some sources have said Robert dated Shirley even before he met Maureen in 1966. He also returned to dating Shirley after he divorced Maureen in 1983. In fact, Robert and Shirley had a child together in 1991 named Jesse but they never got married.
With the circumstances outlined above, it will be easy to conclude that Plant may have been seeing Shirley while he was still married to her Sister Maureen. However, this has not been confirmed and it will not be appropriate to conclude that Shirley was the root cause of Robert and Maureen’s divorce.
Another factor that is believed to have facilitated the couple’s divorce is the death of Karac in 1977. Karac was the couple’s youngest child and he passed while Robert was on a US tour. This became too much for Maureen to bear.
Hence, Robert’s absences due to touring in addition to the tragedy left made him and his wife part ways amicably while still co-parenting their children.
Finally, Plant reportedly had some extra-marital affairs that could have contributed to his divorce. He notably had a ‘tour wife’ by the name of Audrey Hamilton.
While the reason behind the estranged couple’s divorce remains speculative, Maureen and Plant have remained good friends. Plant notably attended Maureen’s 70th birthday in 2018 as a guest artist, performing songs like Litle Sister, One Night, and A Big Hunk O’Love for her.
